Death is nothing else but going home to God, the bond of love will be unbroken for all eternity. ~ Mother Teresa ~

This memorial website was created to remember our dearest Joan Tappen who was born in United States on November 4, 1933 and passed away on January 26, 2009. You will live forever in our memories and hearts.

 About Mom

She was the most incredible woman who loved the ocean, her family and of course Barry Manilow. She was dedicated to helping the homeless in N.Y. She was employed at John Heuss House in Manhattan,N.Y for many years. Although she still was working at 75 years old it is what she loved to do.It was her passion.Mom has been sick for quite some time but still managed to do what she loved and never complained about her illness.John Heuss House was soon to shut their doors and Mom knew her passion and dedication that she lived for was now going to be just a memory. Mom's journey home to God came just a short time after learning John Heuss House will be closed forever.

Dear Mom,

We miss you very much and not a day goes by we don't think about you.We will miss you calling us early in the morning on our birthdays and sing to us up to your final days with us.The emptiness will never disappear. You have been such an inspiration to us.You taught us to care for people in need and to stand up for what is right. You dedicated your life to helping others especially the homeless who are left out on the streets with no resources and you always came to them with your hand out.You camped out with the homeless in front of City Hall to prove a point that they were not going to be invisible any longer.Your strong will and determination helped so many people who otherwise would have had been left to die on the streets. As you always said when people do good things for others you receive "Another shingle on your house in Heaven" I know for sure that the day you went home you had a very beautiful mansion waiting for you..You sure deserve every shingle on it. I know you are at peace now and with no more suffering. One day when God calls the rest of us home we will meet again and be together for eternity.

( Maybe share a buttered roll)

Love,

Your Family

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Lynn, My heart goes out to you and your family. Sorry for your loss. Sorry we could not be there at this time. Mike

I knew your Mom way back when. She was a beautiful person then. Im so sorry for your loss.

Dear Grandma,
Words cannot describe the impact you have made on my life.
You have always made me want to be a better person through everything you have done.
I have so many memories of sharing our lives together.
There are so many days to look back on and say "I am so lucky i got so spend so much time with that wonderful lady, so many lovely days"
The beach, ice skating, shows, your work at JHH, shopping, traveling and sight seeing are just some of life's pleasures you helped me find...i promise to continue on this journey with your love and compassion for the world in my mind.
I hope I grow up to be just like you; strong-willed, independent, and appreciated. I hope I grow up to be the type to do anything for what I really care about, as you did your whole life.
In honor of all of the lives you've touched, I can promise that you will never be forgotten and you will always be missed.
Everyday I will pray that someday we will meet again and start a new journey together, even better than before.
Love you with ALL my heart Grandma, you were all I could have asked for and more.
Love Ally Pooh
